Android and iOS drive mobile app explosion [infographic]

One year ago, less than 40% of mobile subscribers in the United States had a smartphone. That number has increased dramatically, however; according to Nielsen, one in two mobile subscribers now owns a smartphone. Driven mostly by the rise of android and iOS, which account for more than 80% of the U.S. smartphone market, 2012 has turned into the year of the app. The average number of apps installed on each smartphone has jumped 28% in 2012, an increase from 32 apps to 41. Smartphone owners are also spending increasingly more time using apps than using the mobile web, roughly 10% more than last year. Nielsen notes that the top five most active apps continue to be Facebook, YouTube, android Market (now google Play Store), google Search and Gmail. Despite the increase of apps, smartphone owners spend roughly the same amount of time using them each day — 37 minutes in 2011, compared to 39 minute in 2012.

How to get started with the Amazon Cloud Drive app

Another week, another cloud storage application. Following last week’s introduction of google Drive, Amazon earlier this week released a desktop application for its Cloud Drive service. There’s been a lot of buzz regarding cloud storage these days. Dropbox, Skydrive, Cubby, Box, google Drive, OwnCloud and what not; it seems as if every major IT company wants to claim its spot on the cloud storage throne. Amazon hasn’t stayed behind either, as they have just launched windows and Mac apps for their popular cloud storage service, Amazon Cloud Drive. In case you have been living under a rock for the past few months, Amazon Cloud Drive was introduced back in 2011 with 5GB of free space to the users, with additional paid storage plans. It not only lets people upload files to the cloud, but also move music purchased from Amazon MP3 store, directly to the cloud. With the introduction of the desktop app, it would now be a lot easier for users to upload and store files to share with their colleagues or friends. Whether it is any better than other cloud services is another debate, but let’s find out how it works.
